Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bolster Defense with Newcomers in Minicamp

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are gearing up for a fiercely competitive training camp, starting in late July. The team is currently in the midst of a three-day mandatory minicamp, which is the last step in their offseason workout program. In the offseason, practices have a different set of rules than the ones coming later this summer. Collectively bargained offseason regulations prohibit players from wearing pads or making intentional contact while on the practice field. Despite these restrictions, the Buccaneers have seen a palpable energy in minicamp and OTA practices. The team has made an effort to spike their defense with some nastier, edgier players, and it appears they have succeeded. Newcomers like A'Shawn Robinson, Rakeem 'Nacho' Nuñez-Roches, and Rueben Bain Jr. have turned up the dial on the competitive nature of practice. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has noticed the change, saying, 'When you get new faces – Nacho's been here before – but you get guys who come in and spark a new energy.' Mayfield also mentioned that the new pieces on defense have brought a lot of energy to the team, making every practice competitive. The team's competitiveness was on display last week, but it got a little too close to the line in terms of contact rules. Head Coach Todd Bowles said there were too many plays with players on the ground, and the NFL took one of the Bucs' 10 OTA days away. Bowles stated that the team understands the importance of practicing safety and avoiding intentional contact. The Buccaneers will surely showcase their new defensive energy when the pads go on at training camp. The team's focus on safety and competitiveness will be on display again, and it will be interesting to see how it pays off in the end.
